Experiences, Systems, and Identity as Miles (mi.) (2018)

Through the exploration of miles (mi.) I wish to characterize distances between (groups of) people and memory, as well as investigate the manner in which these systems of proximity were created and now maintained. Through the use of paper, tires, and drawing materials I wish to replicate iconography of miles and culture. My identities as Queer, Latinx, first generation US citizen are where I will contain the context of culture. Therefore, my book will focus on the relationship between miles and the identities which I mentioned.

Reproductions of representations of miles are at play, running over papers and then drawing based off of the marks of the tire, running over finished drawings, charting maps, etc. The icons of my cultural backgrounds may be obvious to those who are a part of these similar experiences, but my intention is for everyone to be able to read the entire composition (including the iconography used) and have something to ponder critical about. This will be difficult because of the wide variety of icons in Latinx (in my case Honduran and Mexican), Queer, and US communities.

I draw on tracing paper, drawing paper, and black aluminum.

The text below is an extension of this book, an imagined set of sounds to represent the starting of a car, the beats that I want to dance to, the seemingly invisible yet loud traces that cars leave behind.
